Salt Lake News Guild Mission Statement

The Salt Lake News Guild protects and advances the interests of Salt Lake Tribune newsroom employees. We include the reporters, photographers, columnists, designers, web developers and audience team members who produce the journalism Utahns depend on to better understand and engage with our state.

Our mission is to ensure The Tribune remains Utah’s independent voice.

We are committed to democratic values and the viability of our nonprofit newsroom. We honor our legacy and history of empowering our statewide community. We strive to cover every corner of Utah, from Logan to Loa, Milford to Moab, and Salt Lake City to St. George, regardless of what’s popular or drives clicks and pageviews. We reject influence over our work from donors, advertisers and special interests.

We are dedicated to a supportive work environment. We want a newsroom that reflects the diversity of the communities we cover, attracts top talent and supports career growth. To meet those aims, we urge Tribune leadership to work with us in providing more clearly defined roles, mentorship opportunities and sustainable workloads, as well as salaries and benefits that reflect the wider industry.

We believe The Tribune’s own mission is bolstered by a represented workforce, pioneering labor standards, equitable pay, adherence to the ethics of journalism and transparency imparted to employees and readers. We seek a seat at the table where decisions are made and a role in guiding our nonprofit journey.

The Salt Lake News Guild looks forward to working with Tribune management to forge our shared path toward a sustainable future.
